Hey; it’s me, Kaj. You might know me from TAFE or uni or roller derby, and if you do, you probably know that I’m trans (if not, this sure is a fun way for you to find out! My pronouns are they/them by the way). It has taken me a long time but I am finally letting myself pursue “top surgery,” which is a gender-affirming double mastectomy.

Top surgery is prohibitively expensive. Even with insurance, I’m looking at about $10,000 in out of pocket expenses. I don’t have a lot in the way of savings or superannuation thanks to being unemployed during the pandemic (I moved to Melbourne from Tokyo about three weeks before the first lockdown). I will be unable to work for a time after the procedure and will have no income. I also have to pay to see a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist for a few sessions and have them write me a referral letter before the surgeon will operate on me.

So I am engaging in the time-honoured trans tradition of crowdfunding my surgery. I know my goal is high, and I don’t expect to reach it, but any amount will help me afford this surgery.

This surgery will be life changing for me. I currently have to choose between being comfortable with my appearance and being comfortable (and safe) when engaging in activities that make me happy. Currently I wear a compression garment called a binder to alter the appearance of my chest, but you can’t wear a binder and breathe effectively while singing. You also can’t wear a binder and safely exercise, let alone play a full-contact sport with wheels strapped to your feet.

The surgeon’s fee is $9000, of which ~$300 will be rebated by Medicare, and my private health insurance might also cover an amount (but I’m having trouble getting an exact figure out of them). The same goes for the anaesthetist’s fee of $2500. I have to pay both sums in full before being admitted for the surgery; I can only claim rebates and refunds afterwards. My insurance will cover the hospital stay but there will be an excess of $750 payable on the day. Some of the money will also go towards paying bills and buying groceries while I heal at home.

Gratitude is something I struggle with communicating, but I will be so incredibly grateful to everyone who donates, no matter the amount.
